Every student, whether in K-12 or higher education, is unique. They have different capabilities, different learning styles and different approaches to solving problems. As such, a one-size-fits-all method of learning will inevitably do some students a disservice.

For a long time, though, teaching has followed a fairly predictable pattern -- the teacher prepares and delivers a lesson in the same way to the same set of students and then sends the students on their way to apply what they have learned in the lesson or study the subject further. It's predictable, but not always the best method.
